Summer Reading Activities
This week we have a guest reader and crafter, Haley. Haley shares the story, Custard Surprise and then shows how to complete your very own menu. Supplies needed are paper (color and white), markers, felt, gluestick and scissors. Supply kits will be left on the table at the front doors. Please remember that craft kits are limited. Thank you Haley for a great story and craft!!
Paper Bag Princess (Robert Munsch)
This is one of my favorite stories because of the twist at the end. We call fairy tales like this "fractured". The images are also great.. Look at the details of the images as you listen to the story. How do the colors help tell the story? What tiny details do you notice in the faces of the characters? Try watching the video again. Pause the video so you can really look at the images.
After listening to the story and finding the details of the illustrations, imagine yourself as the illustrator. Draw your own picture of your favorite scene. What details will you include or change? What colors will you use? What art supplies will you need? Share your pictures with me!
Ada Twist, Scientist
What do you want to know? What are you curious about? Have you ever imagined yourself as a scientist?
Well, Ada not only imagines it, she becomes a scientist. She explores her world, asks LOTS of questions, and does experiments.
This week go to the Sora App, log in, and borrow Ada Twist, Scientist (directions for Sora are on the main page). Read with your family. Then choose from one of the following experiments and record your results. Let me know what you find out after doing the experiment. And don't forget to take pictures and send to me!
**Remember to ASK PERMISSION and get and adult to help you!***
1. Soap Powered Boat
2. Discovery Bottles
3. Fizzy Lemonade
4. Coffee Filter Butterflies
5. Your choice!
Ocean by Maurice Pledger
Thank you Leah for being the guest reader this week. Leah has shared a beautiful book on the ocean. In the second video she shares a craft for making your own octopus. The supplies you need are simple: paper plate, markers or crayons, paper (streamers, tissue , color), tape, scissors and string.
If you create an octopus please SHARE your photos so we can post them here. Email me at email@example.com
As a challenge, what other ocean animals can you create? Maybe you can draw an ocean scene, build a sea turtle, or create a fish puppet. Imagine what it would be like to swim in the deep ocean waters and visit with these amazing creatures. If you were a deep sea diver, what animals would you see?
Up In the Leaves
We are kicking off Summer Reading and Imagining Our Stories by revisiting the book Up In The Leaves by Shira Boss (see video link below). We didn't get the chance to read this book in school and make our own treehouses. So, this week I'm going to encourage you to imagine and build your house. by making a Fairy House (or any other type of miniature house). You can build your house inside (in a shoe box?) or outside (under a tree or bush?).
As you watch the book video, look at all the houses Bob built. Each one was different. How can you make your house unique? What materials will you use to make your house? How big or small will it be?
Like any good builder, it will be good to make a sketch of your house and a list of items you might like to use. Then go out and collect them. Make sure you have permission to do this project and to collect items, especially if you're not in your own yard!
Materials you can use: craft supplies, rocks, sticks, flowers, leaves, grass, dirt, pine cones, feathers, nuts, seashells, and bark from dead tress (remember to respect nature when collecting items). Use what you have on hand at home!!
If you need inspiration you can google Fairy Houses an look at the thousands of images!
Don't forget to take a picture of you house and email it to me at firstname.lastname@example.org. I can't wait to see what you imagine and create!
For July 7th we will be making a paper plate Octopus after reading the book Ocean. Thank you to Leah for creating the videos for the book and craft! If you would like to participate in the craft, I can provide you with the materials. All you need at home is tape and scissors. Please email me by 7/6 in order to have your craft supplies ready for pick up on 7/7.
